What is a Pasture Exchange Program?
A pasture exchange program connects livestock owners with landowners who have available pasture or grazing land. These programs provide critical assistance to livestock owners who need additional grazing areas due to drought conditions, land loss from wildfires, or enhanced grazing management practices.
By facilitating these connections, pasture exchange programs help ensure livestock have access to adequate forage while supporting sustainable land use across agricultural communities.
How Does It Work?
- 1
Landowner enrollment – Pasture owners complete a provider form to list available grazing land in the program
- 2
Interested livestock owners – Livestock owners browse the available pasture provider list and select suitable properties
- 3
Direct negotiation – The livestock owner contacts the landowner to negotiate terms, conditions, and sign a grazing agreement
- 4
Livestock placement – Animals are moved to the designated pasture for the agreed-upon duration
